FACT OR FICTION?

The Sound of Music began as an adaptation of the real-life story of the von Trapp family. Before becoming the much-loved, Oscar-winning film starring Julie Andrews, it was a Broadway musical, and stagings of it sell out theaters to this day. How much do you know about the show's history? And how much of The Sound of Music's story is true? Find out below.
1. The film and Broadway show are based on a 1956 Austrian documentary.
TRUE: Both the film and the show are based on a 1956 documentary and its 1958 sequel, The Trapp Family in America (Die Trapp-Familie in Amerika).

2. Julie Andrews performed the lead role in the 1959 Broadway production of The Sound of Music.
FALSE: Actress Mary Martin played the lead role in the smash Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

3. Georg refused to fly the Nazi flag on their house.
TRUE: Not only did he not fly the flag, but he also declined a naval command and a request to sing at Hitler's birthday party.

4. When Austria fell under Nazi rule, the family fled to Italy, then sailed on to New York, arriving penniless.
TRUE: The family did flee the country and their home became the headquarters of notorious Nazi soldier, Heinrich Himmler.

5. Maria von Trapp made millions from the success of the 1965 film.
FALSE: Though the film set box office records for the time, Mrs. von Trapp received only about $500,000 in royalties.

6. The von Trapp family hiked over the Alps to Switzerland as depicted in the film.
FALSE: The family boarded a train for Italy, not Switzerland; Salzburg is much too far from either the Swiss or Italian borders for anyone to cross by walking.

7. The real Maria von Trapp makes a cameo appearance in the movie version of The Sound of Music.
TRUE: She and her daughter can be seen walking past an archway during the song, "I Have Confidence", when the line, "I must stop these doubts, all these worries/If I don't, I just know I'll turn back" is sung.

8. When the von Trapp family fled Austria, they eventually ended up in Vermont where they opened an Austrian style ski lodge.
TRUE: The Trapp Family Lodge (http://www.trappfamily.com/) was destroyed by a fire in 1980, was rebuilt in 1983, and is still going strong today.

9. Maria came to the von Trapp family as governess to all the children.
FALSE: In 1926, Maria was hired as a tutor for one of the children, also named Maria, who was recovering from scarlet fever.

10. Maria fell helplessly in love the Georg von Trapp almost immediately.
FALSE: In her autobiography, Maria claimed that she fell in love with the children at first sight, not their father, but she was advised by the nuns to do God's will and marry Georg. However, she admitted that over time she grew to love him very much.
