The ape man depicted in the show is based on the skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis, from the Pliocene Epoch. Discovered in Ethiopia in 1974, "Lucy" was named after the Beatles' song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Also discovered that year was "Site 333," which contains the remains of 13 individuals, all of whom seem to have died at the same time—and not from predators.
