It’s that time of the year again, for… horror! You thought we were going to say good cheer (well, that too). We’ve already put a spotlight on heartwarming holiday movies, why not fill out the season with some chillers?
And, this roundup of British-based horror films provides a good reason to stay inside and safely tucked in:
1. Shepherd
Tom Hughes stars in the just released Shepherd. Based in Scotland, Hughes portrays a young man whose wife just committed suicide. Following the loss, he begins to question his sanity, seeing her ghost at the funeral. In an attempt to flee his past, he moves to a remote island.
2. Eden Lake
We saw Michael Fassbender and Kelly Reilly as a loved-up couple in 2008’s Eden Lake. The two go on a weekend getaway, but their R&R is interrupted by some rambunctious youths. The teens’ antagonistic behavior turns violent and things get quite serious, quite fast.
3. The Woman in Black
In 2012, we saw Daniel Radcliffe in The Woman in Black. Radcliffe portrays a lawyer who travels to a small village for business matters. There, he witnesses strange going-ons, like unexplained screaming, but when he addresses it with the locals, his suspicions are dismissed.
4. High-Rise
Tom Hiddleston took the lead in 2015’s High-Rise. The story revolves around an all-inclusive apartment building. It’s so inclusive, that the residents never leave. But, there’s a division of wealth and tension grows as the months pass. The rules crumble away, resulting in violence and chaos.
5. The Girl with All the Gifts
2016’s The Girl with All the Gifts is set in a post-apocalyptic society with the majority of the population infected by a mind-altering fungus. There’s a young girl (Sennia Nanua), who is infected, but not 100 per cent and is still able to think. She may be the secret to survival.
6. Bad Samaritan
We saw David Tennant in the title role of 2018’s Bad Samaritan. Two burglars invade his home, but there they find a woman being held captive. The wannabe criminals report this to the authorities, to no avail. Even so, the homeowner seeks revenge on the men, ruining their lives.
7. Saint Maud
In 2019’s Saint Maud, we see Morfydd Clark as a hospice nurse. She is beyond dedicated to her patient and helps to ease her emotional and physical pain. But, possibly a little too dedicated, as it becomes obsessive. Jealous of her patient’s friend, she strikes her, ultimately losing her job.
8. Malevolent
In 2020, we saw Florence Pugh in Malevolent. She portrays an American living in Scotland, who is a part of a team of paranormal investigators. There’s one small flaw: they’re fakes. When the team goes to put on a show at a country estate, the jig is up when they face the supernatural.
9. The Owners
We saw Maisie Williams in 2020’s The Owners. She and a couple of pals think it’s a good idea to rob an empty house full of cash. But, the house isn’t empty and the owners then hold the invaders captive. There is no visible way out and things just get creepy on top of creepy.
10. Amulet
In 2021’s Amulet, we see Imelda Staunton as a nun, Sister Claire, who invites a former soldier into her home for refuge. She hopes the man can help with upkeep of the house and companionship for her young board. It’s just a matter of what the woman upstairs thinks of him.
Do horror films give you a fright or a delight!?
