10 of Our Favorite Rescue and Survival Movies: From 'Walkabout' to 'Cast Away'

Thirteen Lives, a survival movie about 2018's genuinely incredible Tham Luang cave rescue, arrives on streaming today (August 5). This got us thinking about other survival movies that have kept us on the edge of our seats, so here's a guide to 10 of the best.
1. Walkabout (1971)
This all-time classic follows two Australian schoolchildren (Jenny Agutter and Lucien John) learning to fend for themselves in the Outback after their father pulls a gun on them. It's a dreamy, hypnotic movie that Agutter has described as an allegory for our "loss of innocence" as we grow from children into adults.
2. Everest (2015)
This biographical movie is based on the events of the 1996 Mount Everest Disaster, during which a group of climbers got caught in a blizzard while coming down from the summit. It's a stirring and, in places, very sad story with an all-star cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Keira Knightley, and Emily Watson.
3. Lord of the Flies (1963)
Adapted from William Golding's iconic novel, this British film follows a class of schoolboys marooned on a tropical island during an unnamed war. It's safe to say that their fight to survive leads to some highly questionable decisions: today, we can see echoes of this influential story in the hit series Yellowjackets.
4. Eden Lake (2008)
When a young London couple (Michael Fassbender and Kelly Reilly) head to a remote country lake, they're expecting a quiet and rejuvenating vacation. Instead, they end up being terrorized by a local lang led by Jack O'Connell's menacing Brett. This British film is a mix of horror and survival story that gets very grisly indeed.
5. The Revenant (2015)
Inspired by the true story of gutsy frontiersman Hugh Glass, this survival movie features an Oscar-winning performance from Leonardo DiCaprio. Among the obstacles he overcomes in the bitterly cold Dakotas are a mauling from a wild bear (yes, really) and the shady scheming of fellow fur trapper John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). This one's a real epic.
6. All Is Lost (2013)
If you like your survival movies stripped to the bare bones, this one is for you. Robert Redford stars as an unnamed man stuck alone in the Indian Ocean after his boat collides with a shipping container. There are no other characters in the movie, and Redford speaks barely 50 words in the entire film.
7. Life of Pi (2012)
Ang Lee won an Oscar for directing what is arguably the most visually stunning survival movie here. Adapted from a bestselling novel by Yann Martel, it stars Suraj Sharma as a 16-year-old boy stranded on a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean with only a Bengali tiger for company. It's a beautiful and strangely life-affirming watch.
8. The Shallows (2016)
Imagine getting stranded on a surfboard a few hundred meters from shore, then being spotted by a hungry great white shark. That's the hellish premise of this super-tense survival movie starring Blake Lively, which became a sleeper hit when it opened in theaters back in 2016.
9. The Grey (2011)
Liam Neeson is the kind of guy we'd want by our side in a survival situation. He stars here as John Ottway, an oil company employee who has to defend himself from several packs of Canadian Grey Wolves when his plane crashes in Alaska. We're rooting for him the whole way.
10. Cast Away (2000)
Tom Hanks gives a brilliant, Oscar-nominated performance in this fondly remembered survival movie. He plays Chuck Noland, a FedEx executive who washes up on an uninhabited island after his plane crashes into the Pacific. During his long, long stay there, his only "companion" is Wilson, a volleyball with a face drawn in Noland's own blood.
