10 British Actors Who Have Coupled-Up and Are Married in Real Life

It's just been announced that actors Keeley Hawes and Matthew Macfadyen, who have been married since 2000, are to play a married couple in the upcoming political miniseries Stonehouse. This got us thinking about other British actors who are married to one another, so here are 10 of our favorite real-life thespian couples.

1. Emma Thompson and Greg Wise

Thompson and Wise met on the set of 1995's Sense and Sensibility, a film adaptation of Jane Austen's 1811 novel. They married eight years later and live in London's West Hampstead neighborhood with their daughter Gaia and son Tindy. When Wise competed on the U.K.'s Strictly Come Dancing last year, Thompson was often seen in the audience cheering him on.

2. Michelle Gomez and Jack Davenport

Gomez (Doctor WhoThe Flight Attendant) and Davenport (The Morning Show, Pirates of the Caribbean) have been married since 2000. They live with their son Harry in Litchfield County, Connecticut, in a beautiful country house that you can peek at in this Architectural Digest feature.

Harry Potter's Professor Umbridge and Downton Abbey's Mr. Carson have been married since 1983 and have a grown-up daughter, Bessie. As this lovely clip from The Graham Norton Show highlights, they're definitely a couple with a healthy sense of humor. They actually met during rehearsals for a West End production of Guys and Dolls; more recently, they have worked together in the two Downton Abbey movies.

Snowpiercer star Goldberg and Revenge actress Madekwe, who appeared together in the TV series Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Salem, tied the knot in 2012. David Walliams tweeted at the time that he and David Schwimmer delivered the best man's speech at the wedding.

5. David Tennant and Georgia Tennant

Doctor Who hero Tennant met Georgia Moffett, the daughter of another Timelord actor, Peter Davison, when they starred together in the 2008 episode "The Doctor's Daughter." The couple married in 2011 and live in Chiswick, West London, with their five children (including Ty Tennant, who is also an actor). Recently they have appeared together in the lockdown-themed comedy series Staged, which Georgia also produces.

6. Sanjeev Bhaskar and Meera Syal

Bhaskar (Unforgotten, The Indian Doctor) and Syal (Doctor Who, Beautiful People) co-created and starred in the hit BBC sketch show Goodness Gracious Me, which ran from 1998 to 2001. They also starred together in the popular BBC sitcom The Kumars at No. 42, in which an aged-up Syal played the grandmother of Bhaskar's character. They have been married since 2005 and have a 16-year-old son, Shaan.

7. Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz

Bond star Craig and Oscar winner Weisz (The Constant Gardener, The Favourite) have been married since 2011. They keep things very low-key, but it was reported in 2018 that they had welcomed their first child together (Craig also has a daughter and Weisz a son from previous relationships). They live together in the Cobble Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn.

8. Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley

In 2009, Hardy (Venom) and Riley (Peaky Blinders) worked on two projects together, co-starring in the crime series The Take and TV movie Wuthering Heights. They married in 2014 and now have two children together; Riley is also stepmother to Hardy's son from a previous relationship.

9. Jennifer Saunders and Adrian Edmondson

AbFab actress Saunders and The Young Ones star Edmondson worked together in the early '80s as part of The Comic Strip comedy collective. They married in 1985 and have three children together, as well as five grandchildren. Edmondson actually has a guest role in Saunders' sitcom Absolutely Fabulous as Hamish, a very wordy restaurant critic who works at Patsy's magazine. 

10. Kit Harington and Rose Leslie

Harington and Leslie portrayed an on-screen couple in Game of Thrones, as Jon Snow and Ygritte, and then became a real-life item as well. They wed in June 2018 at the historic Wardhill Castle in Aberdeenshire, where Leslie hails from, and welcomed their first child last year.
