You can look for Ben Whishaw in the medical dramedy This Is Going to Hurt as an overworked NHS doctor. The series airs on BBC One in the U.K. and is heading to AMC in the U.S., with a premiere date yet to be announced.
Whishaw is ever-changing, as an actor and as a person.
Let’s take a look at where he got his start and where he is now:
1. He made his feature film debut at 18-years-old.
Whishaw’s first on-screen role was in 1999’s The Trench. The story revolves around a group of British soldiers and how they prepare during the days leading up to The Battle of the Somme. Whishaw portrays Private James Deamis, who is a new recruit, reporting to Sergeant Telford Winter (Daniel Craig).
2. He enjoys reminiscing about the early days.
Prior to The Trench, Whishaw had starred in a series of commercials for Birds Eye chicken curry. BBC America’s very own Graham Norton was inclined to bring up the ads and show them off when Whishaw swung by the studio for a chat. Whishaw does a fine job of talking us through the production.
3. He stepped into a lead role seamlessly.
In 2006, Whishaw starred in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer as Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. Genouille was born with an impeccable sense of smell, which he turned into a vocation, as a perfumer. But his passion for perfection became an obsession. He took extreme measures to bottle the scent of women.
4. He can separate fact from fiction.
Whishaw has a penchant for portraying troubled people, but it’s not a reflection of him as a person.
In an interview with The Guardian, he says, “It’s weird, isn’t it? Because I don’t see myself that way and I’m not that way. But I agree that obviously I’ve played a lot of people like that. I don’t know why it’s come about to be like that.”
6. He’s created a nice balance in his choice of roles.
Not all of his characters struggle. One of our favorite roles of his, is as Freddie Lyon in The Hour. The miniseries covers the start of the first TV news show in the U.K. Lyon is a home affairs correspondent for the program. He's whip smart, which he relies on to get the job done.
7. His roles keep rolling out.
We’ve seen him in the Bond films as Q and as a reluctant informant in BBC America’s London Spy, landing him in the true crime series A Very English Scandal. Whishaw plays a young man, who's conspired against by a former love interest, who also happens to be the British Liberal Party leader (Hugh Grant).
8. He’s recognized for his work.
In 2019, Whishaw won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor, based on his performance in A Very English Scandal. He wasn’t able to attend the ceremony, as he was performing on Broadway.
9. He can handle the stage just as well as the screen.
Speaking of Broadway, Whishaw starred in Anne Carson’s Norma Jeane Baker of Troy, which kicked off at NYC’s The Shed. Whishaw starred as an office worker, who was obsessed with the recently deceased Marilyn Monroe. The script is both spoken and sung.
10. He has a fun side, too.
Whishaw’s roles lean toward serious, but we’ve also seen him take on playful. In 2014, he starred in Paddington, lending his voice to the beloved bear. He returned in 2017, to reprise the role. Annnd, it’s just been recently announced, a third installment is in the works, which is set to begin later this year.
This may call for a Ben Whishaw marathon. What do you think!?
