10 Reasons We Can't Get Enough of Joanna Lumley

Joanna Lumley is one of those actresses who is truly timeless. Of course, we know her as Patsy, Edina's drunken other half in the classic comedy series Absolutely Fabulous. But, another role — one that never gets old— is in the 2004 festive film Ella Enchanted as the icky step mother Dame Olga, which you can catch over at AMC as part of its Best Christmas Ever celebration (available all month).
Let's put the magically-infused Ella Enchanted on and go down memory lane with this fine actress, and remind ourselves why we appreciate her:
1. She was a Bond girl.
In 1969 Lumley popped up in the Bond thriller On Her Majesty's Secret Service, opposite George Lazenby as 007. While she may have not had a slick cool name like Pussy Galore, she has indeed earned the iconic title of Bong Girl. Lumley's character is credited as "The English Girl."
In the above clip, Bond is surrounded by a gaggle of women, but can you spot Lumley? We'll give you a hint, she seems less than impressed by Bond storytelling, discreetly covering a yawn.
2. She's been playing sassy roles for a while.
From Bond, Lumley turned to soaps, starring in eight episodes of Coronation Street in 1973. She takes on the role of Elaine Perkins, who is not shy to say what's on her mind. In the above clip, Elaine is introduced to a gentleman at a party and when he says he's not the sporty type, she replies, "Why? Too lazy or too cerebral?"
It might be a bit rude, but at least she ended the remark with a compliment.
3. She makes action look easy.
In the 1970s, Lumley starred in The New Avengers (1976-1977), the sequel series to the original The Avengers (1961-1969). Lumley, Patrick Macnee and Gareth Hunt starred as British Intelligence agents, making up a three-person crime-solving team. Lumley stepped into the role of Purdey seamlessly, doing a whole lot of running in the mystery drama.
Purdey holds her own in this male-dominated occupation. Get it girl!
4. She's a master at sketch comedy.
Lumley proved herself as a dramatic actress but is just as good at bringing the funny. In the 1980s, she starred as a regular in the Kenny Everett Television Show (1981-1988). In the above clip, we see her as a very by-the-book pharmacist. When a young man is too shy to ask for condoms, she talks him through it. Maybe a little too well, landing them on a dinner date... with said condoms in hand.
We like how her character stands her ground, and that her gender doesn't affect her profession. But, eh, flattery can get one everywhere.
5. She made Patsy Stone a legend.
A lot of us were introduced to Lumley in the 1990s, when she starred opposite Jennifer Saunders in Absolutely Fabulous, originally airing over five seasons (1992-2003). These gal pals are attached at the hip, best friends, ride or die. They don't really need anyone else. Saunders' character does have a daughter, but Patsy forgives her for that and just kind of ignores the teenager.
On a recent visit to The Jonathan Ross Show, Lumley was asked how Patsy would fare in lockdown, with the actress, saying, "As long as she had half a room filled with cigarettes, the other filled with Bolly and vodka, I don't think she would have noticed."
6. She has the best voice.
Lumley is an amazing actress and can really deliver a line, but that voice... that's not something one can invent. She has that deep, throaty way of speaking and it's just so commanding. Lucky for us, in the above interview she spends forty minutes chatting with Richard Coles about her career. They start off by reminiscing about her modeling days, with Lumley saying, "In those days, anybody could be a model. I mean, literally anybody. I mean, if your head was stuck onto your neck, you could be a model."
When she speaks, people listen... and laugh (with her).
7. She once locked lips with Leonardo DiCaprio.
You may remember Lumley popping up in the 2013 biopic The Wolf of Wall Street. She plays Aunt Emma to Margot Robbie's Naomi. When in London, Naomi's husband Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo Dicaprio, pays a visit to Emma. The two go for a walk and find a park bench to have a chat. At the end of their convo, unexpectedly to Emma, he leans over and plants one right on her.
We can't blame him, she is a catch. While they were acting and it wasn't a genuine romantical moment, it did happen.
If you watched the above clip and were sorely disappointed as it cuts off right before the big moment, not to worry, here's a peek:
8. She has four BAFTA awards.
She's so good at her craft, that she's been recognized by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). In 1993 and 1994, she was awarded for her role as Patsy Stone in Absolutely Fabulous. In 2000, she was commended for her work on The New Avengers with a Special award. And in 2017, she received the BAFTA Television Fellowship.
In the above clip, her friend and coworker Jennifer Saunders presents the Fellowship award.
9. She's taken us around the world.
In addition to acting, she hosts a travel series, with programs like Joanna Lumley's India, Joanna Lumley's Greek Odyssey, Joanna Lumley's... well, you get the gist of it, i.e. insert the name of the location. And, she's gracious enough to take us along with her.
When visiting Haiti, she and her group ran into trouble, being held up at gunpoint (we're sorry to say). But, she is so cool and collected when recounting the scary situation, saying to The Independent, "Suddenly there was a blockage across the road. They'd put branches down. Luckily, we had two big bodyguards who got out and said: 'Come on guys, clear this away.'"
10. She's still at it.

Lumley has had an amazing career, tackling action, drama and comedy, and has recently completed the IFC Film Falling for Figaro. The movie revolves around a young woman (Danielle Macdonald) living in the Scottish Highlands, who leaves her unfulfilling job to pursue becoming an opera singer. Lumley takes on the role of a former opera diva, now singing teacher, who will work to help this young woman compete in a singing competition.
And, circling back, if you'd like to have a catch-up with Lumley, you can find her in 2004's Ella Enchanted, opposite Anne Hathaway, available for streaming at AMC.com.
