10 Things You May Not Know About Alan Cumming

There's no one quite like Alan Cumming, the versatile actor, singer, and all-around renaissance man with a whipsmart sense of humor. His latest project is hosting The Traitors, a buzzy new reality show coming to Peacock following successful launches in the U.K., Australia, the Netherlands, and several other counties. To whet your appetite, here are 10 things you may not know about a man who's every bit as unique as his surname.

1. He has his own cabaret bar.

It's called Club Cumming – what else? – and you can find it in NYC's East Village. Discussing the club's vibe earlier this year, he told The Catalyst: "Club Cumming's byline is 'All ages, all genders, all colors, all sexualities.' Everyone is welcome and anything could happen. I've created this space where I want to go. And I think that's a great thing – no one's too old to go to Club Cumming."

2. In the past, he also had his own fragrances.

They were called... wait for it, Cumming The Fragrance and 2nd (Alan) Cumming. According to the website from back in the day, 2nd (Alan) Cumming was an "anti-celebrity scent" that was all about "sex, scotch, cigars, and Scotland." All profits from the tongue-in-cheek perfumes went to charity.

3. He's an award-winning theater producer.

Cumming's acting career really took off when he won a Tony for playing the Emcee in a 1998 revival of Cabaret. Earlier this year he picked up his second Tony, for Best Musical, as one of the producers of A Strange Loop. Written by Michael R. Jackson, it tells the story of a Black queer man writing a musical about a Black queer man writing a musical – it's pretty meta – and also counts RuPaul, Jennifer Hudson, and Billy Porter among its producers. So, Cumming is definitely in good company.

4. He has vowed never to do another Comic Con again.

Thanks to his role as Nightcrawler in the second X-Men movie, Cumming could be a regular at Sci-Fi events if he wanted to. However, as he explained during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, it's not an experience he's anxious to repeat in a hurry... even if he did get paid with a suitcase of cash.

5. He turned down a role in the Harry Potter movies.

Cumming was approached to play Gilderoy Lockhart, the egocentric author and Hogwarts professor who was eventually portrayed by Kenneth Branagh. However, he didn't exactly jump at the opportunity. "I didn't turn it down, I told them to f**k off!" Cumming told the Daily Telegraph. “They wanted me and Rupert Everett to do a screen test. They said they couldn’t pay me more than a certain sum, they just didn’t have any more money in the budget.”

Sadly, Cumming soon found out that Everett had been offered more money than him – because, somewhat awkwardly, the two actors shared the same agent. "Like, if you're going to lie, be clever about it," Cumming told the Daily Telegraph.

6. He and Miriam Margolyes really hit it off on The Graham Norton Show.

In fact, they got on so well that they ended up making two travel shows together: Miriam and Alan: Lost in Scotland and Miriam and Alan: Lost in Scotland and Beyond. "We leave little WhatsApps for each other all the time, you'd be shocked by some of them," Cumming told The Guardian. "There's zero filter. She'll say, 'Darling, now I'm sitting on the loo so if there's strange noises you'll know what it is.'"

7. He and Margolyes have their own tartan.

It's called "Aliam" – a portmanteau of their names – and they created it on their first travel show. According to the manufacturers' website, its distinctive bright colors "are a tribute to their lives and spirit."

The manufacturers explain: "For Miriam, there's turmeric yellow depicting the land and soil of her other homeland Australia, dark blue for its connotations with the Jewish festival Hanukkah, and the sapphic lavender lilac for its association with lesbianism. For Alan, the green portrays the country forest estate that he grew up on which was a destination on their tour, and yellow simply because it is his favorite color. The pale pink is for both figures, representing something that unites them… lustfulness!"

8. He's a published novelist.

Cumming's book, Tommy's Tale: A Novel of Sex, Confusion, and Happy Endings, was first published in 2002, then reprinted in 2014. According to the synopsis, it follows 29-year-old Tommy as he "begins to feel the urge to become a father" and questions whether his life as a committed singleton "can ever make him happy."

Cumming has also written several memoirs, including one with a title inspired by Oprah Winfrey, as he recalled hilariously on The Graham Norton Show.

9. He holds dual citizenship.

Cumming is a proud Scotsman, but since 2008, he has also been a proud American citizen. He explored his identity in the 2018 one-man show Legal Immigrant, and has also done advocacy work for the I Am An Immigrant campaign.

10. He may be hosting a reality show, but he has no intention of appearing on one.

Cumming has turned down Strictly Come Dancing – the U.K. equivalent of Dancing with the Stars – and I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here, which drops British stars into the Australian jungle. "When my agent tells me I’ve been asked to do these things, what I find hilarious is that I never know who these 'celebrities' are! And I don’t think that’s a good sign," he told Metro. "I have been asked to do Strictly a few times. And various other ones. And I get why, I’m kind of famous and I’m also fun and personable and chatty, but no. It’s just not my thing."
