10 Things You Never Knew About 'Emily in Paris' Star Lily Collins

Over the last decade or so, Lily Collins has shown her range by appearing in everything from glossy fantasy movie Mirror Mirror to the Oscar-nominated Hollywood biopic Mank. Along the way, she played Fantine in the BBC's adaptation of Les Misérables, portrayed J.R.R. Tolkien's wife Edith in Tolkien, and gave an acclaimed performance as a woman battling anorexia in To the Bone
Now she's back leading Emily in Paris, the hit Netflix series in which she plays Emily Cooper, a young woman who moves from Chicago to France to further her career and experience a different culture. With the sweet escapist show dominating many online conversations, here are 10 things you may not know about its talented star.
1. You probably know what her dad does – he's actually Phil Collins – but her mom Jill Collins runs a West Hollywood home decor store specializing in upcycled antiques.
It's called Waverly on Donehy and you can check out the website here.
2. Phil Collins' Oscar-winning song "You'll Be in My Heart" – from Disney's Tarzan – was written as a lullaby for her.
Collins shared the sweet story during an appearance on Harry Connick Jr.'s talk show.

3. She made her acting debut at age two in Growing Pains, a short-lived BBC drama series from the early '90s.
The series, which centered on a middle-aged couple who decide to become foster parents, is unrelated to the '80s US sitcom of the same name.

4. She auditioned for Kristen Stewart's role in the Twilight movies.
"This was many years ago," Collins recalled in a 2013 interview covered by E! "I was new on the scene, new at auditioning and it was always kind of this, 'What's going to happen?' [with] everyone in the waiting room waiting for you. [It was] one of those anxious days as a young actor."
Sadly, Collins didn't say how close she came to landing the role of Bella Swan.
5. While filming the Ted Bundy biopic Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, she believes she may have been visited by his victims.
Collins said that while preparing for her role as Bundy's girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer, she found herself being woken up by "flashes of images, like the aftermath of a struggle" each morning at 3.05am. "I discovered that 3am is the time when the veil between the realms is the thinnest and one can be visited," Collins told The Observer. "I didn’t feel scared – I felt supported. I felt like people were saying: 'We’re here listening. We’re here to support. Thank you for telling the story.'"
6. Though she speaks with an American accent, she considers herself a little more British.
Collins spent the early years of her life in Surrey, near London, before moving to L.A. with her family. "I am British," she told Elle recently. "I mean, I’m both, but I associate more with being British. When I play roles with British accents, there’s something about it that feels like I’m speaking naturally, even though I’m having to put it on."
7. As well as starring in Emily in Paris, she serves as a producer on the show.
During a recent interview, Collins explained how the show has taken strides to improve its diversity in season two. "After season one, hearing people’s thoughts, concerns, questions, likes, dislikes, just feelings about it, there were certain things that spoke to the time that we’re living in and what’s right, and moral and correct and should be done," she told Elle
"And [that was] something that I felt passionate about," she continued. "[The producers] all believed in the same things. And I really wanted diversity and inclusion in front of and behind the camera to be something that we really put our focus on, in a lot of ways. Hiring new people in front of the camera, also giving new storylines to different characters, which was really important."
8. She considers Elton John her "honorary godfather."
Collins isn't entirely sure, though, about persistent rumors that the 'Rocket Man' singer used to babysit her. "I’ve really got to sit my parents down and ask them questions about that. I’ve been hearing it for so long, but I really have no idea," she told The Guardian in 2019.
9. She studied broadcast journalism at USC, and believes it has helped her acting career.
"I always knew that I wanted to act. But I was always super intrigued about asking questions and seeing human nature and human response and knew it would better inform me as an actor," Collins told The Independent. "And then, taking that on camera, I could better understand my angles, what it was to edit, how edits happen and how to take direction."
She added: "There are so many facets of the industry I think can be applied to other areas you wouldn't necessarily associate them with. So having those skills is really important because a lot of people in the field you end up in haven't necessarily had the type of experience you've had. It can give you an interesting perspective I think."
10. She even put in a stint as a brief Nickelodeon presenter.
Yes, really – check out her interview with Drake Bell from back in the day.
