10 Things You Never Knew About Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson may have made his name in the teen-friendly Twilight franchise, but since then he’s proven himself to be a versatile actor who’s willing to take risks and ping-pong between genres. Last year he starred in historical epic The King and quirky black-and-white horror flick The Lighthouse; this year he's in Christopher Nolan's brilliant and befuddling blockbuster Tenet; and 2022 will bring his most high-profile project since Twilight: the iconic title role in The Batman.
With Tenet now available on DVD and streaming services, here are 10 things you might not know about the intriguing London-born actor.
1. When he was 12, he got expelled from school for stealing adult magazines, then selling them to his classmates.
“I got so cocky that I would take the entire rack,” Pattinson disclosed on The Howard Stern Show in 2017. Pattinson's cottage industry ground to a halt when the store clerk caught him stealing and phoned his school to report what had happened. Still, the actor said that before he was found out, he was selling each magazine for a pretty hefty "30 bucks."
2. Before he got famous, he sang and played acoustic guitar at open mic nights around London.
Check out footage from one of his teenage livestream gigs below.
3. During his early teens he worked as a fashion model.
“When I first started I was quite tall and looked like a girl, so I got lots of jobs, because it was during that period where the androgynous look was cool," he told the Daily Express in 2008. "Then, I guess, I became too much of a guy, so I never got any more jobs. I had the most unsuccessful modeling career.”
4. At school, a drama teacher tried to steer him away from acting.
"When my drama teacher told me, 'I don't think you should do the creative subjects', that had a massive impact on me, and I had to go to an out-of-school drama club because I didn't feel like I was worthy of the school play," he told Elle in 2015. "A lot of people, when they're young, tend to be like, 'I've got something to say and I want everyone to hear it!' But I never wanted anyone to hear what I'm saying, because it's probably stupid.'"
5. His sister Lizzy auditioned for the U.K. version of The X Factor in 2014.
She reached the Top 6 in her category – the Over 25s – before being eliminated from the competition by Simon Cowell. She's also recorded backing vocals for two of Carter Burwell's Twilight movie scores.
6. He didn't go to university because of Harry Potter.
"It went so far over schedule, I couldn’t go," he told Time Out London in 2017. "It was supposed to be four months, but it ended up being ten or 11."
Still, being cast as Quidditch champ Cedric Diggory didn't mean a punishing schedule on set. "I’d turn up to set every day but not work for weeks at a time. I was 17 and I was the only person who wasn’t in school. I’d just hang about," he added.
7. He'd probably rather you didn't call him "R-Patz."
"I don't understand what the nickname culture is," Pattinson told TODAY in 2012. "If I could figure out a way to get rid of that, it'd be amazing. It does sound like an antacid tablet."
8. Pattinson still makes music from time to time today.
Check out “Willow,” a beautiful song he recorded with alt-rock band Tindersticks for the soundtrack to his 2019 movie High Life.
9. When he was younger, he also wanted to be a rapper.
He revealed during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers that his teenage rap name was, um, “Big Tub.”
10. He used to share a flat in London’s Soho with fellow actor Tom Sturridge.
And he and the Sweetbitter star are still friends today.
