7 Kate Winslet TV Roles: From Russell T Davies' 'Dark Season' to 'Mare of Easttown'

This year alone, Kate Winslet has signed up for three TV roles: the latest being The Palace, a miniseries about an authoritarian regime directed by Stephen Frears. This may seem like a change of lane for an actress who usually works in the movies, but actually, she has a few more TV series on her résumé than you may realize.
Here are seven of them, including a couple that show a slightly lighter side to Winslet.
1. Dark Season (1991)
As a teenager, Winslet landed her first significant role in this BBC children's drama written by future Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies. She plays Reet, a high school student who becomes suspicious of a new teacher, Mr. Eldritch (Grant Parsons), whose arrival coincides with some pretty spooky goings on. Davies looked back fondly on the series in an Instagram post last year, recalling that it was the first script he ever had commissioned.

2. Anglo-Saxon Attitudes (1992)
Winslet was still only 16 when she appeared in this award-winning miniseries written by period drama specialist Andrew Davies. She has a relatively small role as Caroline Jenington, a character who is peripheral to the love triangle at the story's center, but she was definitely in good company. In fact, one of her co-stars was future James Bond star Daniel Craig

3. Get Back (1992-1993)
Winslet's first sitcom role was also her last... to date, anyway. Written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, who also created the popular 1990s sitcom Birds of a Feather, Get Back follows a once prosperous family who downsize to a small rented flat during the recession. Winslet appears in both seasons as Eleanor, one of the family's daughters, co-starring opposite Ray Winstone and future Gavin & Stacey actor Larry Lamb.

4. Casualty (1993)
The BBC's weekly medical drama has been running since 1986, making it a true national institution. Winslet appeared in a typically hard-hitting 1993 episode as Suzanne, a teenage babysitter who is suffering abuse at the hands of her boyfriend. She's hardly the only famous actor to have passed through Casualty at the start of their career. Orlando Bloom, Tom Hiddleston and Minnie Driver all have the show on their résumé, too.

5. Extras (2005)
Ricky Gervais
and Stephen Merchant's showbiz sitcom attracted loads of A-list guest stars, but Winslet was one of the funniest. She gamely sent up the fact that, at the time, she had been nominated for four Oscars without winning one. She also gave Maggie (Ashley Jensen) some hilariously salty advice for making phone calls with her partner more intimate. Truly, this guest spot was a side to Winslet we'd never seen before.

6. Mildred Pierce (2011)
Winslet won her first Emmy for her performance in this classy HBO miniseries based on James M. Cain's novel. She plays the title character, an L.A. waitress who uses hard work and business acumen to become a successful restaurant owner, but never earns the respect of her snobby daughter Veda (Evan Rachel Wood). It was a risky role for Winslet given that Joan Crawford gave an iconic performance in the 1945 Mildred Pierce movie, but she really makes it her own.

7. Mare of Easttown (2021)
Winslet's latest TV role surely needs no introduction. In this heartbreaking crime drama, she plays Mare Sheehan, a Pennsylvania detective investigating the murder of a teenage mother and the disappearance of another local girl while trying to process the death of her son. It's a beautifully layered performance with a pitch-perfect Philly accent that deservedly won Winslet her second Emmy.
