7 Reasons We Appreciate 'The Suspect' and 'Fleabag' Star Sian Clifford

In The Suspect, a police procedural available to binge now on Sundance Now and AMC+, Sian Clifford plays the fiancé of a high-flying clinical psychologist (Aidan Turner) accused of murder. Her character Fenwick is a fellow psychiatrist who is super-sharp, but also super-loyal to her beleaguered partner.
It's another fine performance from the British rising star, so we're taking a minute to look back at some of her career (and personal) highlights so far.
1. She played Claire in Fleabag.
As the older sister of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's title character, Clifford gives us a character who initially seems aloof and judgmental, but ultimately turns out to be supportive and relatably flawed. We'll never forget the episode in which Claire gets a really terrible – sorry, "French" – haircut.
2. She and Waller-Bridge are longtime friends.
They have such great chemistry on-screen because they have a sister-like relationship in real life. The two actresses met at London's Royal Academy of Arts (RADA) back in the day and have been "thick as thieves" – Clifford's own words – ever since. You can check out their fun IRL vibe below.
3. She was also brilliant in Quiz.
This British miniseries available on AMC+ dramatizes a high-profile scandal that rocked the U.K. edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. Clifford plays Diana Ingram, who was accused of helping her husband Charles (Matthew Macfadyen) to cheat his way to the top prize by coughing whenever quizmaster Chris Tarrant (Michael Sheen) read out a correct answer.
4. She popped up in See How They Run, too.
Released in September, this comic murder-mystery movie centers on an unexplained death that takes place backstage at The Mousetrap, a famous West End play. Clifford takes pride of place in an awesome ensemble cast that includes Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell, David Oyelowo, Ruth Wilson, Lucian Msamati and Adrien Brody. It's a tongue-in-cheek romp that's well worth seeking out.
5. She tells it like it is.
In 2020, Clifford was nominated for a BAFTA in the same category as Waller-Bridge. Because the ceremony was virtual that year due to the pandemic, she found out she had won over Zoom. "I will never forget that feeling when that was announced, and I nearly vomited into my laptop camera," Clifford recalled in an interview with The Observer. "I absolutely had not prepared a thing. And there was a panicked 30 seconds before because suddenly I was sat in someone’s garden with terrible wifi and the Zoom organizers were screaming at me and Phoebe to get into a different room. It was very Fleabag that moment, I have to say."
Given all of this, we reckon Clifford's acceptance speech came out rather well.
6. She's keen to expand her range.
Clifford generally gets offered roles as rather buttoned-up, sensible characters, but she definitely wants to branch out some more. "I'm longing for a part that is a bit wilder. Something a bit more unhinged," she told The Independent earlier this year. "I’m really desperate to play a villain. Or someone who is utterly authentically joyful."
Let's hope she can make it happen – we'd certainly love to see Clifford in full-on villain mode.
7. She's a great believer in meditation.
Clifford sings the praises of meditation in the video interview below. Honestly, just watching a minute or two will make you feel more relaxed.
