Aidan Turner has signed up for a complex new TV role as a clinical psychologist who seems to have something to hide.

The Being Human and Poldark actor is to star in a five-part TV adaptation of Michael Robotham's hit crime novel The Suspect, which has been commissioned by U.K. network ITV.

According to an ITV press release, the series is being written by Peter Berry, who recently wrote several episodes of AMC's Gangs of London.

Turner will play Dr. Joseph O’Loughlin, a clinical psychologist with a successful career and loving family who is recruited by the police to offer insight into the mysterious death of a young woman found in a shallow grave in a west London cemetery. However, O’Loughlin's unconventional and rule-bending approach soon begins to set off alarm bells among his co-workers.

"I am thrilled to be taking on the complex and demanding role of Joseph O'Loughlin, a man with so much to give but so much to lose, and a hidden darker side," Turner said.

The psychological thriller series will co-star Shaun Parkes (Small Axe, Doctor Who) Sian Clifford (Quiz, Fleabag), Camilla Beeput (Save Me (Too), Peep Show), Adam James (Vigil, Doctor Foster), and Anjli Mohindra (Vigil, Bodyguard).

Shooting is due to start this fall. There's no word yet on a U.S. home for the series, but given Turner's post-Poldark profile – and the popularity of the source material – it's hopefully only a matter of time before it gets picked up. Watch this space.
