Alan Rickman's diaries are to be published in a book scheduled for a fall 2022 release.
The late Die Hard and Harry Potter actor kept handwritten diaries from the early '90s until his death from pancreatic cancer in 2016, leaving 27 volumes that he always intended to be published.
Straightforwardly titled The Diaries of Alan Rickman, they're now being edited by Alan Taylor of the Scottish Review of Books, who told The Guardian that Rickman's diaries are "anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy, and utterly candid."
"They make compulsive reading and offer a peerless insight into the daily life of a remarkable actor who was as beloved in the U.S. as he surely was in the U.K.,” Taylor added.
The diaries are said to include Rickman's frank views on politics and various plays he saw, as well as behind-the-scenes recollections from the sets of movies including the Harry Potter franchise, which he worked on from 2001 to 2011.
“More than anything though, the diaries reveal the real Alan Rickman: funny, passionate, occasionally provocative, and give fresh insight into his art,” publishers Canongate said. “He wrote his diaries as if chatting with a close friend. They provide pitch-perfect vignettes: short, pithy paragraphs painting big pictures, and offering intriguing insights into himself, his peers and the world around him. They are intimate, perceptive and very funny.”
Rickman died at age 69 on January 14, 2016 from pancreatic cancer. His Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe wrote on Facebook at the time: "Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with. He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I've ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I'm pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn't have to do that."
