Playing the so-called "hot priest" in season two of Fleabag has made Andrew Scott one of this year's major pop culture talking points, but the Irish actor is remaining characteristically modest about it all.

Asked by London's Evening Standard about his character reportedly fueling a rise in searches for religious porn, Scott replied: "Yeah, yeah," before letting out a nervous laugh and saying: "And somebody said for Halloween there’s a new priest outfit, so that’s pretty cool. I won’t be wearing it but, you know. Whatever floats your boat."

He then said of the role turning him into a bit of a sex symbol: "It’s embarrassing to even think about it."

However, Scott also shared his pride in playing a character which showed a different and more relatable side to priesthood. "It wasn’t just a storyline for shock value," he said. "To see a priest who is a human being is important. To fall in love with somebody but to be married to the church — that’s a really interesting dilemma. I think more people of our generation would enter the church if they could have a love as well as a spiritual life."

Scott might find some of the attention a little embarrassing, but his career is definitely on the rise post-Fleabag; he's recently landed the lead in a new TV adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley and signed up to appear in season two of BBC and HBO's His Dark Materials.

In the meantime, we'll see him in Sam Mendes' war movie 1917, which opens December 25. His co-stars in that one include Colin Firth, Richard Madden, and his old Sherlock nemesis, Benedict Cumberbatch.
