The Academy Awards are set to take place this coming Sunday, March 27. And there are a bunch of familiar faces who have been nominated. We’d like to take this opportunity to recognize those who are being honored for their recent work.
Let’s get ready for the ceremony by putting a spotlight on these Anglo regulars:
1. Benedict Cumberbatch
Benedict Cumberbatch has mastered both TV (Sherlock) and film (The Imitation Game). He’s been nominated for Best Actor based on his performance in Power of the Dog. The period drama takes us to Montana, revolving around two brothers who are ranchers. Their isolated life is interrupted when the younger brother marries. His new wife and her son join them on the ranch, resulting in discord.
This is Cumberbatch’s first Academy Award nomination.
2. Ciarán Hinds
Ciarán Hinds has starred in a number of projects embraced by viewers, including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. He’s now being embraced by his peers, nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his contribution to Belfast. The story follows a young boy growing up during "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland. Hinds stars as his “pop,” i.e. grandfather.
This is the first time Hinds has been nominated for an Oscar.
3. Olivia Colman
Olivia Colman joined the BBC America family in 2013, starring in Broadchurch. Since then, she’s starred in The Crown as Queen Elizabeth II. Colman has been nominated for Best Actress based on her role in The Lost Daughter. Colman plays a woman who is on a beach holiday. She befriends a younger woman, who is struggling with motherhood. Colman’s character can relate and the two develop a kinship.
Colman won Best Actress in 2019 for The Favourite.
4. Jessie Buckley
Jessie Buckley is fairly new to the blog, starring in recent projects, like 2020’s Misbehaviour. But, she did get our attention and is now on our watch list. She also stars in The Lost Daughter, as the younger version of Colman’s character. In flashbacks, we see just how hard things were for her as a new mother. While the two women “split” the role, they are both being recognized for their interpretations.
Buckley is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. This is her first time being nominated for an Oscar.
5. Judi Dench
Dame Judi Dench on the other hand, we've been following for a while. Dench is being honored for her work in Belfast, starring opposite Hinds. She takes on the role of the loving grandmother, who goes by Granny. She didn’t just play the role of grandmother to child actor Jude Hill, their connection was deeper and she felt like he was her own grandson, which she talks about in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Up until now, Dench had been nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning Best Supporting Actress in 1998 for Shakespeare in Love. This is her eighth nomination.
6. Kenneth Branagh
And, who do we have to thank for bringing Belfast to the screen? Oh, that would be Kenneth Branagh. He wrote and directed the film, which is semi-biographical, based on his life growing up in Ireland. Branagh has been nominated for three awards, including Best Picture, Directing, and Writing (Original Screenplay).
This is his first time being recognized by the Academy, and he is making it count.
7. Jane Campion
Circling back to the start of this roundup, Jane Campion wrote and directed The Power of the Dog. She has also received three nominations, including Best Picture, Directing, and Writing (Adapted Screenplay). The story is based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel by the same name. Campion chased down the rights to the book, reports Indie Wire.
She won Best Original Screenplay in 1994 for The Piano.
The list of nominees goes beyond the above, which you can view by going to the Oscars' official website.
