Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has revealed that she and the 007 creative team are "reinventing" the iconic character for his next movie outing.
As Deadline reports, Broccoli gave the update Tuesday night at a BFI (British Film Institute) event honoring her and fellow Bond producer Michael G. Wilson.
"Nobody's in the running," she said, addressing the ongoing speculation about who will succeed Daniel Craig as 007. "We're working out where to go with him, we're talking that through. There isn't a script and we can't come up with one until we decide how we're going to approach the next film because, really, it's a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I'd say that filming is at least two years away."
So, there we have it: the 26th Bond movie won't start shooting until summer 2024 at the earliest. Craig bowed out with last year's No Time to Die, which grossed a shade under $775 million globally. Even ahead of his final adventure, internet chatter was mounting as to who might follow him in the iconic role, with James Norton, Idris Elba, Cillian Murphy, Regé-Jean Page, Sam Heughan and Aidan Turner all linked to the franchise.
"Reinvented" is a very loaded word. What does that mean to you?
