It was previously announced, that Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) is set to star in a movie based on Mattel's Barbie. The dolls hit toy store shelves in 1959 and are still embraced worldwide. Of course, like any strong woman in the public eye, she faced controversy.

This suggests Barbie, and her history, has the makings of a good story, which is being brought to the big screen by Greta Gerwig, reports Variety. This isn't Gerwig's first time writing and directing a feature film, having helmed 2017's Lady Bird and 2019's Little Women.

We're seeing a pattern here. Gerwig seems to be drawn to storylines with strong female themes and strong actresses, like Lady Bird's Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, and Little Women's ensemble cast, made-up of Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen (just to name a handful).

Robbie is the one who spilled the beans on Gerwig joining the production, talking to British Vogue about her upcoming role, saying: "Right, it comes with a lot of baggage! And a lot of nostalgic connections."

Barbie does have a lot of clothing and accessories, but we don't think that's what she means. We're guessing, it's that there has been talk over the years, that Barbie's physique sets unrealistic standards when it comes to body image.

Possibly, the movie will address that dialogue and help clarify the line between reality and fiction.

The storyline has yet to be announced, but Robbie did hint at what to expect, saying, "But with that [baggage] come[s] a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ’Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”

With Robbie's unexpected transformation into former Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, anything is possible...

We are definitely looking forward to this Gerwig/Robbie collaboration, and to see their take on the story of Barbie.

The release date is slated for 2023, so we have some time to ponder what's to come.
