Benedict Cumberbatch, Meryl Streep and More to Read Roald Dahl's 'James and the Giant Peach' on YouTube
Are you ready for another quarantine read-along? Benedict Cumberbatch, Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett have signed up to read Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach on YouTube.
Taika Waititi, Ryan Reynolds, Mindy Kaling, Lupita Nyong’o, Chris and Liam Hemsworth and Cara Delevingne will also read portions of Dahl's much-loved children's novel.
The full reading of Dahl's 1961 story about a young boy who enters a gigantic, magical peach and is taken on a series of surreal and surprising adventures will be shown on the official Roald Dahl YouTube channel across ten episodes.
It's been devised by The Roald Dahl Story Company, which as part of the project will be donating more than £1m ($1.2m) to charities impacted by COVID-19. One of these charities will be Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, a British nonprofit which supplies specialist nurses to seriously ill children.
Partners In Health, a Boston-based nonprofit which provides healthcare to vulnerable communities worldwide, will also benefit from the donation.
Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi, who is already working on two Roald Dahl-based original series for Netflix, told Deadline: “Being an adult child myself and having read James and the Giant Peach to my girls multiple times, I’m excited to be able to partner with my friends, the Dahl team and Partners In Health and re-tell this story to help those most in need right now. This wacky, wonderful tale is about resilience in children, triumph over adversity and dealing with a sense of isolation which couldn’t be more relevant today.”
Dahl, whose other popular novels include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, Fantastic Mr. Fox and The BFG, passed away in 1990. James and the Giant Peach was previous made into a 1996 movie which combined live-action and stop-motion animation, starring Miriam Margolyes and Joanna Lumley as the title character's two aunts.
The James and the Giant Peach read-along follows an epic endeavor by Andy Serkis, who earlier this month read The Hobbit in full on YouTube with only a few bathroom breaks.
