Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andrew Garfield, and Judi Dench Celebrate Oscar Nominations
Anglo faves Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, and Andrew Garfield are among the actors celebrating Oscar nominations today (February 8).
Dame Judi Dench also picks up a nomination – the eighth of her career – for her performance in Sir Kenneth Branagh's semi-autobiographical film Belfast. The veteran actress now has Oscar nominations in four consecutive decades from the '90s onward. Her Belfast co-star Ciarán Hinds is nominated, too.
Cumberbatch's nomination for his performance in The Power of the Dog is one of 12 lavished on director Jane Campion's Gothic Western, making it this year's most-nominated movie. His co-stars Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst, and Kodi Smit-McPhee join him in the acting shortlists.
Colman is nominated for her leading role in Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut The Lost Daughter. Jessie Buckley, who plays a younger version of Colman's character, is shortlisted for the Best Supporting Actress prize – this marks her first Oscar nomination. Garfield picks up the second Oscar nomination of his career, for his performance in the movie musical Tick, Tick... Boom!
Other actors nominated include Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis for King Richard; Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, and JK Simmons for Being the Ricardos; Ariana DeBose for West Side Story, Kristen Stewart for Spencer, and Penélope Cruz for Parallel Mothers.
Behind The Power of the Dog, the most nominated movies are Dune with 10 nominations, followed by Belfast and West Side Story, each with seven. For his work on Belfast, Branagh is shortlisted for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture, taking his career tally of Oscar nominations to eight.
