Carey Mulligan is just coming off the critically-acclaimed Promising Young Woman — which has earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress — and has signed on for a new role. Mulligan is set to join Adam Sandler in the forthcoming Spaceman, reports Empire Magazine.
While Sandler is known for playing funny, this new project is a sci-fi drama. Based on Jaroslav Kalfar’s 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia, Netflix will be adapting the story for streaming.
Spaceman revolves around an astronaut (Sandler) who is sent to the "edge of the galaxy" to collect ancient dust. But while he's away on his mission, he learns his life at home is falling apart. He speaks to his wife (Mulligan) every day, but it's just not enough.
He can't necessarily take care of his personal life while in space, so he turns to the closest being for help, which happens to be "a creature from the beginning of time lurking in his ship."
According to the book's description, his wife, Lenka, loses patience with her husband and ends up leaving him. This has a grave impact on the astronaut, as he is already questioning his mental state.
NPR describes the story as heavy, but says it "flies along weightlessly," in its review of the novel, which you can read here.
This may be Mulligan's latest casting, but it's not her only upcoming project. You can also look for her in the 2020 Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro and the 2022 romantic drama Fingernails.
