Casting News: Charlize Theron Leads a Band of Mercenaries in 'The Old Guard' Movie

Charlize Theron is just coming off the political-comedy The Long Shot and has now signed on for a new project. She's set to star in the Skydance/Netflix co-production The Old Guard in the title role.

In this action-fantasy story her character is immortal. She oversees a small group of soldiers, who "have been working as mercenaries throughout the ages," according to the description.

The soldiers and their leader have no idea how they've developed the ability to dodge death, but they use it to their advantage, selling their services as killers-for-hire.

It's not clear how long they have been on duty, but they have lived through to the 21st century, when the story takes place. While the soldiers have outgrown the fear of dying, they are now in jeopardy with a baddie organization discovering their supernatural-ness when caught on camera.

Adding to the mix, the group is caught off guard when learning of another immortal, a female Marine. It hasn't been announced where her loyalty lies.

If you'd like to get more of the backstory, you can go to the graphic novel, which the film is based on.

Theron is joined by Marwan Kenzari (Aladdin's Jafar) and KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk). Filming has begun with Gina Prince-Bythewood (Cloak & Dagger) directing.
