Casting News: Dame Helen Mirren is Returning for 'Fast & Furious 9', But Will She Get to Drive?
Do you fancy seeing a Dame in a car chase? Because it's just been confirmed that Dame Helen Mirren is reprising her role as Magdalene Shaw in Fast & Furious 9?
Mirren made a cameo as Magdalene, the mother of Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw, in 2017's The Fate of the Furious. She later expressed a bit of disappointment that she didn't get to jump behind the wheel in the movie, telling Entertainment Weekly at the time: "The whole reason for me wanting to be in Fast and Furious was because I wanted to drive. I’d love to come back, but, guys, I want to drive next time."
Franchise lead Vin Diesel announced Mirren's casting in Fast & Furious 9 in an Instagram post, also confirming that Charlize Theron will be returning as the villainous cyberterrorist Cypher.

But sadly, he didn't reveal if Mirren will fulfil her dream of getting to drive... fingers crossed, though!
Mirren and Theron join a typically impressive cast that includes fellow returning cast members Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and Nathalie Emmanuel, plus newcomer John Cena.
Shooting on the movie started in late-June at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England. Justin Lin, who previously directed films three through six in the franchise, is behind the camera, and Fast & Furious 9 is set for release on May 22, 2020.
In the meantime, you can catch Statham, Dwayne Johnson, and Idris Elba in spin-off movie Hobbs & Shaw, which races into theaters August 2.
