At 88, Ellen Burstyn is doing anything but slow down. The legendary actress has just signed up to reprise one of her most famous roles in a new The Exorcist movie trilogy.

According to Variety, Burstyn will return as Chris MacNeil – mother of Linda Blair's possessed 12-year-old from the iconic 1974 horror movie – in a new $400 million film trilogy commissioned by Universal.

It's being directed by David Gordon Green, who has form when it comes to reinventing classic horror franchises, having helmed the recent Halloween movie trilogy featuring original star Jamie Lee Curtis.

Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton, One Night in Miami) will co-star opposite Burstyn as a man who tracks down Chris MacNeil after his own child becomes possessed.

The first movie in the trilogy, which is being produced by horror specialists Blumhouse, will arrive in cinemas on October 13, 2023. The two subsequent movies could potentially debut on Universal's Peacock streaming service, Variety reports.

Burstyn earned the second of her six Oscar nominations for her performance in the original 1974 The Exorcist movie. Directed by William Friedkin, it became the first horror movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and spawned four sequels, the most recent of which arrived in 2005.

Burstyn was most recently seen opposite Vanessa Kirby in the harrowing family drama movie Pieces of a Woman.
