Roald Dahl's 1988 children's book Matilda, about a gifted little girl, was made into a movie in 1996. And then in 2010, it was made into a West End musical, followed by a Broadway debut in 2013.

And, here we are, the musical is now being made into a movie by Netflix, with Emma Thompson stepping into the role of Miss Trunchbull, the meanie of principal of Crunchem Hall Elementary School, reports Variety. Dennis Kelly, who wrote the play, is adapting the script, with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

Matilda will be played by Alisha Weir, who you may know from 2019's Darklands. We can also look for Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) as the kindhearted teacher Miss Honey.

If this story is new to you, Matilda is not only a genius but has the power to move things with her mind. Her parents are not so keen on this ability and rather than helping her, demean her. And the principal of her school, Miss Trunchbull, is just as unforgiving.

At the least, Matilda does have a friend and supporter in teacher Miss Honey.

The movie adaptation starred Mara Wilson as Matilda, with Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman as her parents. You can also look for Pam Ferris as Miss Trunchbull and Embeth Davidtz as Miss Honey.

In the meantime, Thompson has completed filming on the Disney movie Cruella, opposite Emma Stone, which we can look for later this year. And, she's signed on for the sex romp, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, which is still awaiting a start date.
