Are you ready for another Doctor Who casting announcement? Yasmin Finney, one of the stars of hit British Netflix series Heartstopper, has joined the show as a character called Rose.
The news was announced on the show's official website, which reported that Finney is "filming scenes that are due to air in 2023 to coincide with the show's 60th anniversary."
Now, we know what you're thinking: Doctor Who already has a beloved character called Rose: Billie Piper's companion Rose Tyler. Returning Russell T Davies addressed this coincidence/conundrum in the casting announcement without giving anything away.
Davies says in a statement, "Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose?" He goes on to answer his own question, saying, "You'll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set. We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!"
Since it launched in April, Heartstopper has been widely praised for its touching love story involving two teenage boys, Nick and Charlie. Its portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters across the board has also been welcomed. Finney, who is transgender, plays the boys' close friend Elle, who has transferred to the local girls' school after coming out as transgender.
Finney said in the casting announcement: "If anyone would have told 8-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them. This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready.”
Her casting follows news that Ncuti Gatwa will portray the new Doctor and show favorites David Tennant and Catherine Tate are returning in 2023.
