Helena Bonham Carter and The Watch's Ruth Madeley have joined the cast of The Cleaner, an upcoming BBC comedy series written by and starring Greg Davies (Cuckoo, The Inbetweeners).

Peep Show's David Mitchell, Still Open All Hours' Stephanie Cole, Game of Thrones' Donald Sumpter, Bad Education's Layton Williams, Doctor Who's Shobu Kapoor, Call the Midwife's Georgie Glen, Still So Awkward's Esmonde Cole and Casualty's Zita Sattar have also joined the cast of the six-part series. It's based on a hit German sitcom, Der Tatortreiniger – "Crime Scene Cleaner" – created by Ingrid Lausund.

The Cleaner definitely has a unique premise: Davies stars as Paul ‘Wicky’ Wickstead, a state-certified crime-scene cleaner responsible for removing any signs of death. A BBC press release teases: "Armed with chemicals, scrubbing brushes and cleaning rags, Wicky removes the gruesome mess at the scene of the crime. When carrying out his duties, he stumbles across the strangest of people, from the victim’s relatives, employers, neighbors and acquaintances to occasionally even the murderers themselves. And because he’s a sociable type, he sometimes gossips more than he cleans..."

Davies said in the press release: "I'm thrilled that this remarkable collection of actors has agreed to appear next to me on screen. Scrubbing up blood in a hazmat suit in front of them will be a pleasure."

Jonathan Blyth, Director of Comedy for BBC Studios, added: "We’re so excited about the cracking cast and unique premise and are itching to take this to a wider global audience."

In the meantime, you can catch Ruth Madeley in BBC America's The Watch, which is available to binge in full here. We recently made Helena Bonham Carter our British Icon of the Week.
