Henry Cavill has lined up a high-profile new role in an adaptation of the iconic miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill is attached to star and executive produce the series, which is in the works at Amazon Prime Video. The streamer is said to be "in final talks" for the rights to the game, which was launched by Games Workshop in 1987. It's now onto its ninth edition and is said to be the most popular miniature wargame in the world.
Cavill is known to be a big fan of Warhammer 40,000, which is set in a futuristic world where "mighty armies clash on countless war-torn worlds and humanity stands alone, beset on all sides by the threats of the heretic, the mutant and the alien."
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show last year, Cavill spoke about his love for the game, which involves a "painting and modeling side" as well as a "gaming side." After painting figurines for the game, Cavill went on to explain, "you put them together in little armies and fight against someone else's army."
The casting news ends the week on a brighter note for Cavill, who announced on Wednesday that his stint as Superman has come to an end. Cavill had previously said in October that he would be returning to the role, but new DC Studio bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran have apparently decided to reboot the franchise with a new actor.
"I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it's sad news, everyone," Cavill posted on Instagram. "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."
In November, shortly after sharing his Superman news, Cavill announced that his time on fantasy series The Witcher has come to an end. He also said that he will be succeeded in the title role by Liam Hemsworth, who will lead the show's fourth season.
