Wales is celebrating Saint David's Day today (March 1), so it's the perfect time for a casting story that is absolutely packed with Welsh talent.
The BBC has announced that Welsh actors Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones), Mark Lewis Jones (Gangs of London), Steffan Rhodri (House of the Dragon), Phaldut Sharma (Sherwood), and Aneurin Barnard (War and Peace) are to star in Men Up, a one-off drama about one of the world's first medical trials for Viagra.
The feature-length drama's cast will also include fellow Welsh actors Alexandra Roach (Killing Eve), Paul Rhys (A Discovery of Witches), Joanna Page (Gavin & Stacey), and Lisa Palfrey (Sex Education).
Men Up has been written by Matthew Barry, whose previous credits include Industry, Death in Paradise, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, with returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies on board as an executive producer.
Nicola Shindler (Happy Valley, The Stranger) will also serve as an executive producer on the drama, which is based on the true story of a medical trial that took place in 1994 at Morriston Hospital in Swansea, South Wales. The BBC describes Men Up as a "poignant and beautiful" drama that follows a group of ordinary men and their partners as they fight to rebuild their sex lives.
Barry said in a statement: "Who knew that one of the first Viagra trials in the world took place in 1994... in Swansea! I’m beyond delighted to be working with Nicola, Russell, and the entire team to bring this extraordinary tale to the screen. People hear the word impotence, and they wait for the punchline. But this story is about so much more. And with an incredible Welsh cast, led by Iwan Rheon and Alexandra Roach, I can't wait to bring it to the screen."
