Lesley Manville is getting ready to put on her detective's hat again – in Moonflower Murders, a follow-up to last year's Magpie Murders

The Oscar-nominated actress will reprise her role as book editor-turned-sleuth Susan Ryeland in a follow-up series adapted by Anthony Horowitz from his own book. Manville will be joined again by Timothy McMullan as the famous literary detective Atticus Pünd.

Like Magpie Murders, Moonflower Murders will have a "story within a story" premise, as Pünd is a character who appears in books by one of Ryeland's clients.

Horowitz, whose Moonflower Murders novel was published in 2020, told Deadline: "I can't wait to get started on the scripts of Moonflower Murders. We had a fantastic response to Magpie and, speaking personally, it was a joy bringing Susan Ryeland and Atticus Pünd to life on the screen. There are lots of surprises in the second book, including something I’ve never done before in a murder mystery. It’s going to be great fun."

Moonflower Murders will air on PBS Masterpiece in the U.S. and BBC One in the U.K., which is a slight switch-up from Magpie Murders, which launched in the U.K. on BritBox. In addition to announcing Moonflower Murders, the BBC has confirmed that Magpie Murders will air on BBC One for the first time this Spring.

Meanwhile, Manville recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the hit British comedy movie Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. She also portrayed Princess Margaret in the most recent season of The Crown, a role she will reprise in the show's upcoming sixth season.
