Casting News: 'Mad Men' Star Julia Ormond Set to Star in 'Gold Digger' Romantic Thriller Series
Julia Ormond starred in AMC's Mad Men as Marie Calvet from 2012-2015. You can also look for her AMC's The Walking Dead: The World Beyond later this year.
She's now set to take the lead in the Acorn original series Gold Digger. But, don't let the title fool you... she is not the gold digger, though the term is traditionally used to describe women.
The roles have been switched around, with Ormond playing Julia Day, a 60-year-old woman who starts up a romantic relationship with a much younger man, Benjamin Greene, played by Ben Barnes (Westworld). The U.K.'s The Times calls it "the twisty toyboy thriller that will get everyone talking."
Series creator and writer Marnie Dickens provides some background on the story, saying in a statement, "We're so used to seeing older men with younger women in film and TV, and indeed in politics and real life, it's barely commented on, however yawning the age gap."
"Yet flip the genders and suddenly it's a discussion point... As it's impossible to understand why a younger man might be attracted to an older woman without having some other motive."
It's not clear if his motives are genuine and he's actually in love with Day, or if it's about money. The first look trailer fills in some of the blanks:

Barnes has definitely grown up since we saw him as Prince Caspian in 2008's The Chronicles of Narnia at 26-years-old. The actor is now 38. His character is a grown man and can make grown man decisions. But Day's adult children are clearly threatened by him. It's mentioned in the above trailer that if she and Greene marry, he will get half their inheritance.
They seem oddly worried about what will happen to her money once she dies.
You can look for Gold Digger via Acorn TV starting May 4.
We're intrigued to see how this plays out. Are you?
