Casting News: Martin Freeman to Star as Night Shift Police Officer in New Crime Drama Series

Sherlock and The Office favorite Martin Freeman has signed up for another exciting TV role – this time, in new the U.K. crime drama series The Responder.

Freeman will star as Chris, a police officer from Liverpool, northern England, who works the night shift with his rookie partner, Rachel. Each of The Responder's six episodes will follow the pair on a different shift, and the results are said to be “wildly funny and painfully tragic,” according to Deadline.

The series, which deals with the challenges of policing in Britain as well as the personal complexities of Freeman's character, has been written by first-time screenwriter and former police officer Tony Schumacher. He's been mentored by Jimmy McGovern, creator of a stream of successful British drama series including Accused and The Lakes, as part of the BBC Writers Room, a scheme designed to cultivate new screenwriting talent.

“Tony Schumacher’s script for The Responder resonated with me immediately," Freeman said. “It felt like nothing that I’d read or seen.”

There's no word yet on when and where The Responder will air in the U.S., but Freeman fans don't have long to wait to see him again. He stars in Breeders, a comedy about parenthood from Veep writer Simon Blackwell, which debuts Monday on FX. You can whet your appetite below by reliving a funny moment from one of Freeman's appearances on The Graham Norton Show.
