Casting News: 'Penny Dreadful' Star Rory Kinnear Has Signed On for Series Spin-Off
The Victorian era Penny Dreadful series (2014-2016) is getting a sequel, set in 1938 Los Angeles, reports Deadline. Rory Kinnear starred in the original as Dr. Frankenstein's The Creature and will return for the spin-off called Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, but in a different role.
Penny Dreadful creator John Logan has a plethora of actors to choose from, but Kinnear was cast for a reason. Logan said in a statement, "It's no secret that Rory is one of my favorite actors on the planet, and working with him in the original series was inspiring."
The planet is a very big place; that's not only a sweet but huge compliment. Logan is so keen on the actor that he wrote the role for him.
This time around, Kinnear will be playing Dr. Peter Craft, a pediatrician. Craft is also a member of a German-American organization called Bund, which he hopes will keep the U.S. out of the pending war in Europe.
The new series is being described as a "spiritual descendant" of the first. OK, so can we interpret that as related but removed? The bigger story revolves around an LAPD detective, played by Daniel Zovatto, who is investigating a gruesome murder. The underlying themes will consist of the growth of Los Angeles, including the first highways and the rise of radio evangelism.
We can also look for Natalie Dormer and Nathan Lane in the forthcoming PD revival. In the meantime, Kinnear is set to star in the upcoming BBC/HBO series Years and Years, created by Russell T Davies and also starring Emma Thompson. Years and Years is expected to premiere later this year.
