Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley are teaming up for Fingernails, a film blending sci-fi and romance with a very interesting premise.
Deadline reports that the futuristic movie will mark the English-language debut from Greek director Christos Nikou, who preiously made the acclaimed 2020 film Apples. It also counts the great Cate Blanchett among its producers.
Fingernails will be set in a world where a test has been developed to determine whether couples are really and truly in love. To help them pass the test, so-called "love institutes" have sprung up. When Buckley's character Anna receives a positive verdict on her relationship with her partner, she isn't entirely convinced, so she takes a job working in a love institute with Ahmed's enigmatic character Trevor.
Producers Blanchett, Coco Francini and Andrew Upton said in a joint statement: "The unique and phenomenal talents of Jessie and Riz will perfectly capture the strange humor, heart and pathos embedded in the core of Fingernails. We are thrilled to welcome them and the wonderful team at FilmNation aboard to bring Christos Nikou's profound vision to life."
Both Buckley and Ahmed are already having a terrific 2022. Buckley recently won an Olivier Award for her performance alongside Eddie Redmayne in the West End revival of Cabaret. She also earned an Oscar nomination for her role opposite Olivia Colman in The Lost Daughter.
Meanwhile, Ahmed and director Aneil Karia won the Best Short Film (Live Action) prize at the Oscars for The Long Goodbye, which they co-wrote together.
