We've seen Saoirse Ronan in a number of genres of late, like 2017's family dramedy Lady Bird, 2018's historical drama Mary Queen of Scots, and now she's going sci-fi. Ronan is set to portray a young married woman in the forthcoming thriller Foe, reports Empire Online.

Based on Iain Reid's 2018 novel, director Garth Davis (Lion) will be bringing the futuristic story to the big screen. Ronan is set to star opposite Paul Mescal (Normal People), with the two playing a young couple living on an isolated farm. But, they aren't completely tucked away... one day, they get a knock on the door.

The husband, who goes by Junior, has been chosen to travel to outer space, to live on a space station that is orbiting the Earth. His mission will take him away from his wife, Henrietta (Ronan), for two years.

Junior is not okay with leaving his wife behind, all alone, but the stranger (LaKeith Stanfield) at the door explains, they are making a replica of Junior to keep her company.

Eh, Junior is not okay with that either. And, it makes one think, does Henrietta have a say on the matter?

Davis talks about the draw of sci-fi, saying in an interview with Deadline, "I’ve been on the hunt to do something in sci-fi, it was always on my bucket list, and also to find material I could make an actor’s piece with a Cassavetian level of performance."

He also describes why he chose this story, out of all other stories all out there, saying, "I read Foe and could not put it down. It’s incredibly suspenseful, very moving and dealt with sci-fi in a most grounded way that spoke to where we are heading as a society, with a lot of the questions we all have, explored in a profound way. And the love story just broke my heart, this story of self-determination, fighting for the things that are most precious in our lives, and reminding audiences that this time we have here is precious and the way we treat each other is the way we need to be treating the planet. Foe was just a bull’s-eye, for me."

Foe is in the early works, with a start date yet to be announced.
