Suranne Jones is definitely getting hands-on with her latest project, an intriguing three-part relationship drama called Maryland.
Jones, known for her roles in Doctor Foster and Gentleman Jack, has co-created the series with screenwriter Anne-Marie O’Connor (Trollied). Jones will play Becca, a Manchester-born woman who has drifted apart from her sister, Rosaline.
According to ITV, the U.K. network which has commissioned the series, the two women are forced to reconsider their sisterly relationship after they receive some "devastating news." Not only has their mother died, but they also discover that she had been leading a double life.
Jones said in a statement: "I love how complex sibling relationships can be, and I’m thrilled we get to do it over three wonderful hours and not as a 'side story.' Maryland is an uncomfortable, funny, and sometimes difficult story with two sisters at its heart and we can't wait to take our audience along for the ride."
There's no word yet on who will be playing the second sister, Rosaline, but it sounds like a part many actresses would jump at.
O'Connor added: "From the start, Suranne and I have wanted to tell a story about the roles that are ascribed to us in families – especially as women – and to look at the legacy of a woman who decided to step away from the traditional role but wasn't honest about her decision."
