Thomas Brodie-Sangster has landed the title role in The Artful Dodger, a new series promising a rock 'n' roll twist on the classic Charles Dickens character.
"Twist" is a particularly apt word because the Artful Dodger, a skilled Victorian pickpocket, originally appears in Dickens' classic novel Oliver Twist. According to TVLine, the new series won't be set in London, but in 1850s Australia instead.
David Thewlis will co-star as the Artful Dodger's dastardly boss, Fagin, while Tim Minchin (Californication), Jessica De Gouw (The Secrets She Keeps), and Damien Garvey (Nine Perfect Strangers) will appear in supporting roles.
The series is in the works at Disney+ and will be shot on location in Australia. A plot synopsis teases: "Across eight episodes, the scripted series explores the adult double life of Charles Dickens' famous prince of thieves – Dodger – now a surgeon who can’t shake his predilection for crime. From high-octane heists to life-and-death surgeries, glittering parties to colorful streets, this series is a rock 'n' roll tale with an Aussie connection."
Brodie-Sangster recently appeared as rock 'n' roll manager Malcolm McLaren in Pistol, Danny Boyle's miniseries about iconic punk band the Sex Pistols. At this time of year, many of us will be revisiting his breakthrough performance in Love Actually, which he filmed when he was just 12.
And somewhat coincidentally, a new audio adaptation of Oliver Twist has just been released, with Daniel Kaluuya as Fagin and Elijah Wolf as the Artful Dodger.
