Casting News: Tom Burke Joins 'Mad Max' Spin-Off Movie 'Furiosa'
Tom Burke, who starred as Athos in BBC America's The Musketeers, has joined the cast of George Miller's Mad Max spin-off movie Furiosa.
According to Deadline, Burke has stepped in as a replacement for Emmy-winning Watchmen actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who has exited Furiosa due to scheduling conflicts.
Burke, also known for starring in the BBC/HBO drama series C.B Strike and his movie roles in Mank and The Souvenir, joins Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in the post-apocalyptic blockbuster.
Taylor-Joy is playing a younger version of Imperator Furiosa, the character originated by Charlize Theron in 2015's Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road. Miller is directing and co-writing the movie focusing on Furiosa's origins, which is expected to begin filming next year for a 2024 release.
Miller told The New York Times last year that he initially wanted to "digitally de-age" Theron, but had decided against it after seeing Martin Scorsese's use of this technology in The Irishman. "For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet," he said.
Furiosa will be the fifth movie set in the Mad Max universe. In 2019, Miller told IndieWire that he had "two stories" in mind for future Mad Max sequels featuring Tom Hardy, who played the title character in Fury Road. However, it is unclear whether either of these has been given a green light yet.
