We just reported on Vanessa Kirby, with her set to star in the survival thriller Suddenly. She's now signed on for another new role, joining the cast of The Son, reports Variety.

Based on Florian Zeller's stage play, with Zeller directing, Kirby will be starring opposite Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern.

Jackman and Dern will portray a divorced couple. Jackman's character, Peter, has moved on and now has a new partner (Kirby) and new baby. When his ex-wife, Kate (Dern), shows up with their teenage son, things get complicated.

Their son, Nicholas, is described as "troubled, distant and angry." Also, he's been skipping school for months.

The description for the play-turned-movie says Peter strives to be a better father and to help his son. But Nicholas' condition may be too much for one person to handle, setting the family on a "dangerous course."

Zeller talks about the takeaway for moviegoers in a statement, saying, "The Son is a deeply human story which, I believe, connects us all; I hope audiences will be profoundly moved by this family’s journey."

He also discusses the latest casting, saying, "Vanessa Kirby is for me a very great actress: intense, inventive and powerful. I am especially happy to take her on this cinematic adventure."

The Son marks the follow-up to Zeller's Oscar-nominated The Father, starring Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins, which just premiered this past February and was also adapted from a play.

The Son is in pre-production, with Kirby currently filming Mission: Impossible 7, set to release in 2022.
