Chris O’Dowd has signed on for a new role, starring in the Apple+ TV series The Big Door Prize, reports Variety.

At first glance, the name of the series makes us think of someone checking out at the grocery store and  hearing, “You are the 100th customer!” with balloons and confetti falling from the ceiling.

And, we are not far off, as the story is set in a grocery store. But it’s not 100 per cent based in reality. Instead, the series revolves around a magical machine that can predict a person’s future.

Based on M.O. Walsh’s 2020 novel, customers step into a booth, provide a cheek swab and find out what their potential is. According to the series description, people who work as nurses, teachers and shopkeepers, switch gears, striving to become magicians, cowboys and athletes.

Hmm, but we need nurses, teachers and shopkeepers. What happens if everyone in a community gives up their current vocation to pursue lofty dreams?

O’Dowd’s character is a teacher and he too steps into the booth.

He and his wife consider themselves happy and living a happy life, but they discover they may be missing out.

It makes us think of the expression, “Be careful what you wish for.”

Schitt’s Creek producer David West will be writing The Big Door Prize and acting as showrunner.

There’s no start date as of yet, but you can look for the series over at Apple TV+ once completed.

In the meantime, here’s a peek at O’Dowd in some of our favorite roles of his:
