Colin Farrell recently starred in The Batman as Penguin, making the character his own. He did such a fine job, that he’s getting his own spinoff series, entitled The Penguin. It’s believed to be an origin story about Oswald Cobblepot and how he went from inventive robber to supervillain.
Matt Reeves wrote and directed 2022’s The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson in the title role. He’s back at it, writing the series, featuring Farrell, but he’ll take a break from directing, which leaves the director’s chair vacant.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Farrell discussed how things are going, saying, “Matt’s up to his bollocks, you know, hovering over the keyboard and just planning the story because he’s just so meticulous.”
He also went on to discuss plans: “He’s so obsessive about what he does, but he’s all over The Penguin as well. I mean, he’s not gonna direct it but he’s all over the structure of the scripts and who’s gonna direct them. And so, it’s exciting.”
It’s kind of rare for an actor to make an announcement like this. But, it’s also rare for an actor to use the term “bollocks” in an interview, so… Mr. Farrell may be going by his own rules.
Either way, we appreciate his candidness. And, we’re looking forward to seeing who they land on to direct the series, which is heading to HBO Max.
In the meantime, here’s a look back at Farrell as Penguin:
Who’s on your wish list to direct!?
