'Dallas Buyers Club' and 'Big Little Lies' Director Jean-Marc Vallée Has Died at Age 58
Jean-Marc Vallée, the director of Dallas Buyers Club, Wild, and Big Little Lies, has died at age 58.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Canadian filmmaker passed away "suddenly" over the weekend at his cabin near Quebec City. At present, no cause of death has been disclosed, but his producing partner Nathan Ross paid tribute to Vallée in a statement.
"Jean-Marc stood for creativity, authenticity and trying things differently,” Ross told the outlet. “He was a true artist and a generous, loving guy. Everyone who worked with him couldn’t help but see the talent and vision he possessed. He was a friend, creative partner, and an older brother to me. The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on."
Vallée directed nine feature films during his career, including The Young Victoria starring Emily Blunt and Wild with Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern. His best known movie was probably 2013's Dallas Buyers Club, which told the true story of Ron Woodroof, an AIDS patient who smuggled unapproved pharmaceutical drugs into Texas for himself and fellow patients at a time when treatment for the disease was difficult to come by. Both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Oscars for their performances in the highly acclaimed film.
More recently, Vallée had focused on prestige TV projects. He won an Emmy for directing season one of HBO's buzzy drama series Big Little Lies – which starred Witherspoon, Dern, and Nicole Kidman – and also directed 2019's Sharp Objects, an acclaimed HBO miniseries starring Amy Adams.
He is survived by his two children, Alex and Émile. Rest in Peace, Jean-Marc Vallée, and thank you for your contribution.
