Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Ian McKellen Make Surprise Appearance on Broadway
Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen are set to star opposite each other in the upcoming thriller The Good Liar, premiering on November 15. But, some lucky Broadway-goers got to skip the wait and had a chance to see them together, just last night (November 3). The two popped up at the Booth Theatre in NYC, surprising the Freestyle Love Supreme audience.
Since phones aren't allowed in live performances, we don't have the video, but Lin-Manual Miranda, co-creator of Freestyle Love Supreme, was impressed, sharing his reaction via Twitter:

According to the New York Times, Mirren and McKellen were interviewed by the show's M.C., Anthony Veneziale. The Q&A covered the actors' long-term friendship. McKellen offered up that they got along right away, saying, "We were both into men."
Mirren and McKellen didn't actually rap, but the convo was used as inspiration for the cast to come up with lyrics. With rapper Utkarsh Ambudkar translating the actors' banter into lines like this: "Back in the day, we lived parallel lives. The only thing about it is neither one of us wanted wives."
Apparently it didn't stop there, with Mirren and McKellen joining the cast backstage for dancing and more celebrating. According to beatboxer Kaila Mullady, she thought McKellen was about to break out into rap. It doesn't sound like it happened, but these two prove themselves to be good sports.
At the end of the visit, audience members received a Good Liar tee shirt with the premiere date on it. Yes, this is a bit of promotion, but also a lot of fun.
They definitely get an A+ for effort.
Does this make you like these two even more?
