Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah), Olivia Colman (The Father), and Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) are among the actors celebrating Oscar nominations this morning (March 15).

Emerald Fennell, executive producer of Killing Eve's second season, earns a trio of nominations for her feature directorial debut, Promising Young Woman. In addition to scoring Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay nods, she is nominated for Best Picture as one of its producers.

Promising Young Woman's star, Carey Mulligan, is nominated for Best Actress alongside Viola Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), Andra Day (The People vs. Billie Holliday), Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman), and Frances McDormand  (Nomadland).

In the Best Actor category, Ahmed will compete against The Walking Dead alum Steven Yeun (Minari), Gary Oldman (Mank), Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Father), and the late Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom).

In the Best Supporting Actress category, Colman's fellow nominees include Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy), whom she pipped to the Best Actress award in 2019. This marks the eighth nomination for Close, who will certainly be hoping to break her notorious Oscars duck on the night.

Sacha Baron Cohen is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Trial of the Chicago 7, as well as Best Original Screenplay (alongside his co-writers) for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Overall, director David Fincher's Mank, a biopic of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his development of the screenplay for Citizen Kane, leads the way with 10 nominations. Five films – Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 – have six nominations apiece. The BBC has a handy list here.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony on April 25. In the meantime, you can also check out our recent article on Academy Awards milestones.
