You can look for Daniel Radcliffe as Al Yankovic in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which just premiered November 4 over at The Roku Channnel.
We
never really thought about Weird Al getting the biopic treatment, but now that it's happened, it all makes sense. And, making it oh so much better, one of our favorites has stepped into the role. Radcliffe is always one to make a character his own and 100% invest. In this case, he did both, but he did receive some helpful advice before going into the project.
In an interview with ComingSoon.net, Radcliffe shares a conversation he had with director Eric Appel, saying, “Eric talked to me early on about [how] the tone he wanted for the film was that ‘the situations are insane, and the scenes will be ridiculous, but you guys — particularly the main five actors — you guys need to play it absolutely for real and seriously.”
Appel went a step further and explained his reasoning: “If you are starting to be self-aware, winking at the camera kind of stuff, then the whole thing falls apart,” according to Radcliffe.
Radcliffe embraced the directives and reveals his takeaway: “There was something very freeing about playing a biopic where you are not beholden to accuracy. It means that you can really inject a lot of whatever you kind of feel is useful or fun into the character. I think there’s some stuff in this character that’s absolutely Al, like the earnest sweetness that he has. But then he turns into a vastly different person at some point.”
