David Morrissey has been on our watch list for a while now. You may know him from AMC’s The Walking Dead as “The Governor” or in 2016’s The Missing. He’s now signed on for a new role, set to star in the BBC original series Sherwood, reports BBC Media Centre.
The six-part series is set in Nottinghamshire, England, which is a mining town. Morrissey takes on the role of DCI Ian St Clair, who is investigating “two shocking and unexpected murders.” You can also look for Joanne Froggatt and Lesley Manville among the ensemble cast.
The official description helps explain what to look for: “At the heart of Sherwood lie two shocking and unexpected killings that shatter an already fractured community and spark a massive manhunt. As suspicion and antipathy build - both between lifelong neighbors and towards the police forces who descend on the town - the tragic killings threaten to inflame historic divisions sparked during the miners' strike three decades before.
There are a lot of moving parts with this story, which creator James Graham confirms, saying, “I think I’m impossibly relaxed about it not quite fitting neatly into any one genre," reports TripWire.com.
Morrissey talks about joining the project, saying to the BBC, “Before I read the script, I was attracted to the whole package. I'm a big fan of James Graham's work. I loved his play Ink and This House and I thought Quiz was brilliant. I mean, he is just a fantastic writer, I've always wanted to work with him.”
And, now he is. It’s nice when things fall into place like that.
If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a peek at the trailer for Sherwood:
Sherwood premieres today (June 13) on BBC One with a U.S. release date yet to be announced.
