This is not a drill: Dawn French is to reprise her much loved role as Geraldine Granger for The Vicar of Dibley in Lockdown.
Each of the three 10-minute specials will take the form of a sermon delivered by French's country vicar over Zoom. They'll air individually on BBC One in the U.K. over the holiday season after repeats of classic episodes of The Vicar of Dibley, and then as a bumper 30-minute compilation episode. There's no word yet on how or where they might air in the U.S., where The Vicar of Dibley is available on BritBox.
French will be joined in the specials by James Fleet, who will reprise his regular The Vicar of Dibley role as dimwitted but well-meaning Hugo Horton. Launched in 1994, the popular British sitcom follows French's Geraldine as she tries to offer spiritual guidance and emotional support to an eccentric group of locals living in the fictional village of Dibley.
French said in a BBC press release: “Back in the dog collar, back in Dibley and back on your telly at Xmas. I couldn’t be happier. Bless you.”
Richard Curtis, who co-wrote the classic British sitcom with Paul Mayhew-Archer, added: "Like every village in the country, there’s been a lot happening in Dibley this year — and Dawn has got a lot to say about it.”
The most recent full episode of The Vicar of Dibley premiered in 2007, though French has since reprised her role for several short Comic Relief specials, including the below Red Nose Day special which aired earlier this year:
Sadly, original cast members Emma Chambers (Alice Tinker), Roger Lloyd-Pack (Owen Newitt), and John Bluthal (Frank Pickle) have all passed away in recent years. However, the BBC has hinted that they won't be overlooked in the specials.
The BBC teased in its press release: "Geraldine will be helped by Hugo Horton (James Fleet) as well some of the local primary school children as the Vicar discusses all the important topics, including how it’s never a good idea to let Owen Newitt cut your hair, or make home-made wine. The very dearly departed Alice Tinker is also still an important presence in the village, with some residents still looking for lost buttons and the arrival of decimalization."
