Over the weekend, HBO announced Matt Smith (Doctor Who) will be joining the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, reports Deadline.

Smith portrayed the beloved Doctor, the Eleventh to be exact, in BBC America's Doctor Who from 2010-2014. It appears he'll be going from sci-fi to fantasy, set to take on the role of Prince Daemon Targaryen.

"Targaryen" you say? Oh, the same last name as Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons? Yep.

The 10-part series tells the story of the House of Targaryen and is set 300 years prior to GoT.

On Saturday, Smith took part in a virtual Q&A as part of GalaxyCon and was asked what he's looking forward to most, with him saying, "I’m just sort of looking forward to riding a few dragons…if I get to."

That is definitely a job perk.

While he was teasing the audience a bit, giving out hints about the storyline, Smith continued on with a more sincere tone: "Who knows what goes on in this role, but yeah look – I’m just looking forward to getting started and I think, hopefully, with the people involved, it could be really exciting."

Smith will be joining Paddy Considine, who is set to take on the role of King Viserys, Daemon's older brother.

The forthcoming series is based on author George R.R. Martin's novel Fire & Blood, with him co-writing the series with Ryan J. Condal (Colony).

The series is in the early days, with a premiere date set for 2022 over at HBO.
