Shetland premiered in 2013, starring Douglas Henshall as the dedicated but troubled detective Jimmy Perez. Just recently, it was announced Henshall had decided to make his exit.
Even so, the show will continue without him and a new actor will be cast in the lead.
Henshall talked about what he predicts for the future of the show, saying to the Radio Times, "It will be weird knowing they’re shooting an eighth series and I’m not there. But I’m not sure what the show is going to be."
He’s leaving on a good note, saying, "I hope it works out and I wish them every success, but it isn’t going to be the show I was in. They will have to make a whole other show."
We’ve seen reader comments on social media saying, “It won’t be the same without him.” Possibly, his sharing the above sentiment will provide a sense of calm, that the show will adapt to a new character.
He also talked about retiring from the series, saying it was a difficult decision, but "preferable to being told that we were not going to do it anymore because it had run its course.”
But, before we say goodbye, let’s take a peek at the trailer for season seven:

We understand viewers may have a love-loss for both Henshall and Jimmy Perez, but at the same time, we have more to look forward to from Henshall. He’s already filming a new TV series, entitled Palomino. It revolves around a British teacher living in Spain who becomes involved in a grocery store robbery.
What genre would you like to see him tackle post-Shetland!?
