Eddie Izzard has raised more than £283,000 ($387,000) for charity after running 32 marathons and performing 31 stand-up gigs in 31 days.

The comedian, actor, and activist, who revealed in December that she now prefers to use the pronouns "she" and "her," ran her daily marathon on a treadmill, then performed a virtual stand-up gig from home, in order to maintain social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Izzard, 58, completed her epic challenge by running a double-marathon – a massive 52.4 miles – on Sunday (January 31). Over the course of her month-long challenge, she was cheered on by famous faces including Dame Judi Dench, George Clooney, Stephen Fry, Russell Brand, Ewan McGregor, and double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes. They all kept her motivated by dialing in for video chats while she pounded the treadmill.

According to Sky News, the challenge was so physically grueling that Izzard lost a toenail and remarked that it "looked like the front part of my toe came off." During her 13th marathon, she told actor Jason Isaacs that actually, she "doesn't like running."

Izzard writes on her Crowdfunder page that the money raised "will be allocated to charities making a real difference to disadvantaged and vulnerable people at this difficult time, including some of those dealing with the wider effects of the Covid 19 pandemic."

She adds: "The first five to benefit are Fareshare, Walking With the Wounded, Care International, United to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases, and Covenant House New York City. Depending on how much is donated other charities will also be selected after due process."

This isn't the first time Izzard has completed an epic marathon challenge for charity. In 2016, she ran 27 marathons in 27 days as a tribute to Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison during his fight against Apartheid. And seven years before that, she completed 43 marathons in 51 days, also for charity.
